“We Remember” - Lady Haig Poppy Factory & Ex -Servicemen

The poppy is one of the most recognisable symbols of remembrance, particularly within the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth. Commonly worn in the period leading up to the 11th of November, the poppy represents those who have fallen in conflict, not only during the First World War but in all wars from 1914 to the present day. It serves as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, loss, and the importance of honouring those who have given their lives, as well as those who survived.

For my 2018 graded unit, titled “We Remember,” I produced a series of twenty images exploring the theme of remembrance. The project examines both aspects of remembrance: commemorating those who have perished and recognising those who survived conflict and sacrificed their past for our present. The work focuses specifically on the Lady Haig Poppy Factory and portraiture of ex-servicemen, documenting both the creation of the symbolic poppy and the individuals connected to its meaning.

This project was made with thanks to the Poppy Scotland, Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh and the veterans who took part.
